Camera-Shy Black Snake
Unlike in my book chapter, “Snake Slayer,” I didn't bludgeon this snake deader than dead with a dull-bladed hoe; I shot it with my camera. I've come a long way!
I encountered another Rite of Spring last evening as I was headed out on my walk. Camera-Shy Black Snake Yes, I spotted the first black snake of spring. Its six-foot length was stretched across my path to the first pasture. After the initial “Oh crap—a snake!” response, I ran back to the house to get my camera and glasses. By the time I returned, the snake had slithered over to the peony bushes and was winding its way through them. Obviously, it was camera-shy. I followed its path and got a couple of decent shots—at full zoom, of course, which was only about five feet away! Then, it left the bushes and made a squiggly beeline toward home, where it disappeared into a hole camouflaged by dead weed stalks.
